GLASS EXHIBITION INCLUDES CHIHULY MACCHIAS
"Mingei International’s Cornell Rotunda has been transformed into a garden of macchias--large, exuberant,
spotted and patterned glass sculptures by the internationally renowned, Seattle glass artist Dale Chihuly.
Macchia, the Italian word for spotted or stained, is the name he chose for this series of art glass vessels,
begun with the goal of using all 300 of the colors available in his studio. The macchias are placed on metal
bases, especially designed and fabricated for Mingei International by Custom Metal Enterprises, Incorporated of
National City. The bases have been placed in a 12 foot-square enclosure filled with granite pebbles designed and
executed by Donita Blalock of Koi Koi Living Jewels. (When granite is weathered by water and turned into sand, it
becomes the primary ingredient used to make glass.)"
